A chandlery, more or less

Fort Fun Ships began the way these things usually do — badly, and in a garage. A half-finished Victory sat on the bench for two years because the kit was missing nineteen frames and the supplier had stopped answering. We finished it eventually with parts cut by hand from pear stock, and decided that if we ever sold kits, that would not be how we did it.

So we count every kit. It is not clever and it does not scale especially well, but it means the box you open is the box you paid for.

The instruments came later. A friend restored barometers and sextants and kept complaining that everything sold as “brass” was a zinc casting with a lacquer on it. We started carrying the real ones. They cost more and we sell fewer of them, which seems the right trade.

We are a small operation in Wyoming. We pack the parcels ourselves, we answer the email ourselves, and if something goes wrong you will be dealing with a person who can actually fix it.
